Help! Trying to install XP on a new comp... (Raptor + Asus K8V SE Dx)

I finally picked up my new comp today:
AMD 64 3400
Asus K8V SE Deluxe (rev 1.12)
single 74 gig WD Raptor (sata)

The problem I have is that I can not install XP as it wont recognize the Raptor.

I followed the instructions to use the makedisk.exe to copy the 378 Promise drivers onto a 3.5" disk, and am following proper procedure to select them in Win XP (hit f6, select the Win XP, etc). However, it just says there is no drive.

I have hit "tab" when you start to view the Raid disk array, and it does see the drive so I know it is plugged in properly.

Basically I am stuck 🙁

How can I get Win XP to see the drive?

Or god forbid, please don't tell me I can not run a single Raptor in my system...

Thanks in advance for the help.

This may or may not be the answer, but some boards (and at least one Asus model) require you to configured the one drive as a RAID 0. I had an A7V8X Deluxe that required that, and it also used a Promise SATA controller.

For starters, I'd suggest this:

  • Find the Makedisk.exe that's for the VIA controller (its foldername has VIA in it, not Promise). It's better than the Promise in my wildly-opinionated opinion 😀 Make your VIA SATA driver floppy with it.
  • Plug your Raptor into one of the VIA headers that are next to the VIA southbridge, which it already may be. The two that are operated by the VIA SATA controller are named SATA1 and SATA2, whereas the ones operated by the PCI-bound Promise are marked PRI_SATA and SEC_SATA.
  • Go into the BIOS, then into the Advanced menu, then into the Onboard Devices Configuration. In there, confirm that OnChip SATA BOOTROM is set to Enabled.
  • Now save and exit, and when the POST screen shows again, hit Del to go back into the BIOS again. Before it does, it'll "go shopping" on all the bootable controllers (USB, VIA, Promise, SCSI) for disk drives, then land you in the BIOS after it's done.
  • Now you're back in the BIOS. Go to Boot and then to Boot Device Priority, set it to boot from CD-ROM first and your hard drive second (it should be listed, that's why the motherboard made its shopping trip before letting you into the BIOS).
  • Save & exit again, and see if it cooperates now
