Hi,

I'm trying to install 3rd hard drive in my system. I already have a 10gig for master, 20gig for slave, and trying to get this 80gig for slave as well. The 80gig shows up under device manager, but the drive won't show up under 'My Computer'. I even connected this drive to the IDE channel where the CD-rom is usually connected to, but still same thing. I just bought this 80gig drive from Staples last week, and since it's new out of the box, I don't know if the drive is defective or I'm doing something wrong. Thanks in advance.

Did you properly format the drive? What OS are you using? Can you boot into DOS from a boot disk and access the drive?

I'm using XP. I don't have a boot disk, and I thought you can format drives in windows? That's what I did with my other slave drive earlier.

Also make sure the jumpers are set correctly. Usually there is a Primary Master (main drive), primary slave, secondary master and secondary slave. The primary and secondary depend on which IDE controller it's plugged into. Also, did you install the software properly (if there is any). I failed to do so once and screwed everything up.

Yep, log in as the admin and use the administrative tools to partition and format the disk.

Did the BIOS correctly detect the drive? If not, you probably need to reset the jumper. If it did properly detect the drive, then you need to partition and format it (how you do so will depend on what OS you're using).

u bad boy, read the manual b4 saying something might be defective. u always have to partition a drive.

and why are you using a slow 10gb for your boot drive? the 80gb should be your boot drive.

i'm already logged in as the administrator, and i don't see the drive in 'My Computer'. BIOS does detect the drive, and the drive is also showing up under device manager, but i don't know how to format the drive other than from 'My Computer'. or am i misunderstanding it when you say "administrator tool".

Check in the control panel under "administrative tools" and see if there is a drive manager. I don't know much about XP, but if it is like 2000, you need to check the control panel.

i located it under control panel, and when i went in administrative tools, i see 8 shortcuts which are: Component Services, Computer Management, Data Services(ODBC), Event Viewer, Local Security Policy, Performance, Server Extensions Administrator, and Services. i've been clicking on all of those shortcuts, but didn't see anything helpful.

Go to control panel > admin. tools > computer management > disk management (under storage) > select the drive and partition it. I am guessing you want to create an extended partition and then put a logical partition inside that .. if it is just for extra storage. You can format from here too. You probably want to use NTFS unless you are using as part of a dual-booting system.
