Hello,

I need some assistance troubleshooting a very strange problem. Within the past couple of months, my PC (running XP Pro SP2) started randomly freezing without any notice. I'm not talking about a program crashing, mind you, I'm speaking of completely having to restart my computer using its power switch when this occurs because CTRL + ALT + Del doesn't even work. In short, I keep my computer as up to date as possible - Windows updates, the latest virus and spyware definitions, etc. I run AVG Free, Windows Defender, Adaware Personal and Spyboy Search & Destroy - all with the latest updates and scanned daily - and this continues to occur at random.

I thought I had the problem under control by downgrading my ATI Catalyst drivers (on a Raedon 9700 Pro) to an older version because this stopped happening for a week and a half to two weeks after doing so. However, the problem started up again yesterday and happened again today - while I wasn't even at home using my computer. When I got home at approximately 5 PM, the clock in the systray was frozen at 11:15 AM and the computer had completely locked...the mouse doesn't operate and even the numlock light doesn't go on/off when it's pressed.

I've tried just about everything I know how to do to troubleshoot this. This problem doesn't seem to occur using one program - in the situation mentioned above from today, the computer was running no active applications and still froze. My IDE 7200 hard drive was bought only a few months ago, so it's hard to believe that could be the cause. I closely monitor what runs at startup, as I know how bloated that can get, and I'm running pretty close to the bare essentials.

The only type of hardware I've bought within the past six months is a DVD recorder, which is set to master, while the existing CD-R drive I had is set to slave. I also purcahsed a Microsoft brand keyboard about a month ago, and have tried upgrading the software to the latest version and even uninstalling it completely and this still happens. I don't believe this problem coincides with the time frame of either purchase, though. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

Have you checked for dust build up on your case fans, CPU fans, and PSU fans? Dust build up can cause things to get hot or fans to malfunction.

I removed as much dust as possible but I will say that my PC seems to be running pretty hot, based on the BIOS temperature control. I have a fan on my power supply, two more on the back on my PC and one on the CPU and all seem
to be working, but this is not in a particularly well ventilated room, unfortunately.
