Help troubleshooting GPU seating issue

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA770-DS3 motherboard, and have, ever since getting it (and two replacements, hoping they would fix the issue, but to no avail), been having problems getting it to properly seat a video card in the PEG slot. Was acting this way with my old GeForce 8800GTS320, and is now doing the same with a Radeon HD 4850 that I just purchased. Basically what happens is that, upon seating the card and securing it in my case, the system powers on okay, the GPU fan spins up to top speed, and I get no display whatsoever. (One of those times where I wish the PC speaker hadn't worn out, although it appears to be an issue of the GPU not being properly seated, after having taken it to a repair shop to be examined once.)

The precise issue is that, despite the card going into the slot without incident, it goes in, shall we say, a bit too readily... there's quite a bit of vertical "play" on this slot. The back section of the card is supposed to be held in by a little plastic clip on this board's slot, which I'm thinking might partially be the culprit.

Anybody have any familiarity with this issue and, if so, know how I would go about addressing it?

Have you tried hooking everything up outside of your case?

See if you can get the card to fully seat that way.

Yep, thought about that... did so, and it's even worse then, as it shows just how mobile the card is in the slot.

I'm wondering whether I'll just have to bite the bullet and buy a motherboard with a proper full-length PEG slot rather than mess with this stupid clip anymore.
