Help! Tried to partition and format hard drive, wouldn't finish format, now it's not recognized!

My friend got a new hard drive. I installed it, and booted into windows to see if it saw a hard disk in the hardware profile, it did. So I went to fdisk to partition and format the new drive. When I partitioned it I split it into two new disks (d and e). It partitioned ok, but when I when I restarted and tried to format each drive, they wouldn't format all the way. It said: drive not ready, can't finish formatting. So I restarted again, but this time the computer wouldn't recognize the drive. I can't go into fdisk when the new drive is connected to the motherboard. Any ideas?

Ok what brand HD is it?
Got their site and download their Diagnostics Utility

Western Digital

Run the diagnostics and then if all is OK fine If not try low level formating then refformatting the drive.

It's a seagate (sp?) baracudda. thanks i'll try that.
