Ok...I've been building my own machines for about 7 years now, and this one has me stumped.
Got a new 250GB HD today (SATA). My machine is the one in my sig. Currently have two IDE drives plus one other SATA drive. I am running a dual boot configuration with Vista64 (RC1) on the existing SATA, and WinXP Home on one of the IDE's.
So, I crack open the case, pull out the HD cage, install the new drive, hook up all the cables, and boot 'er up. At this point, the BIOS is not recognizing the new drive. Pulls up the old SATA and both IDE's, but no new SATA. So, I make sure the cables are connected correctly, and sure enough, one is a bit loose.
So, try number 2: Now, the BIOS detection process is going VERY slowly....finally detects the IDEs, skips SATA 3 and 4 (nothing on them), and stalls at SATA 1/2 detection. I try a few things, and it alwas does this...so I am wondering if I need to do something jumper wise with the new drive, as it's SATA 300, and my mobo only supports 150. So, I try the jumpers to lock in 150...no dice. I do have to say, at one time, after disconnecting some power stuff, I accidentally disconnected the CPU fan power. I got a solid tone alarm and shut the machine down within seconds. Reconnected everything and no alarm...things continued normally with the CPU.
So, I want to just boot into Windows, go to the WD site and see what I need to do to get the new drive working...I unplug the new drive, go to boot and:
DISK BOOT FAILURE.
All previous drives are properly detected in BIOS, but it thinks that there is no OS to load, apparently. I'm currently running the 'fix system startup' program from the Vista setup CD, but it's been running for about 15 minutes, and hasn't told me anything.
Obviously, since the Vista setup disk is working fine, the CPU is ok, and everything else is ok. The Vista setup saw the Vista installation on my SATA drive, so the drive is functioning, and the cables are connected properly.
SO....what can I do, and what happened?
Any way to fix the boot problem if Vista Setup fails? And how do I get the new drive to work.
