Hi all,

The other day I received a phone call from what I thought was my credit card company.

She: Your account ending in 8338 has been in good standing. We would like to reward you with $250 worth of free gas and other stuff.

Me: Sorry, I'm not interested.

She: Come on. It won't cost you anything. You can cancel any time you want.

<just wanting her to get off the phone>

Me: Ok.. sure. But I'm going to tell you right now that I will cancel whatever you are offering once I get it.

She: Alright, sir. Let me just turn on the recorder, so we can record this conversation.

<she verifies my shipping address and then asks me whether or not I understand what she is saying. I said yes. Then, the conversation ends.>

I didn't think nothing of it. Then, the next day a guy from Suntasia, Inc. calls me. He says that the recorder from the other day was broken. He asked me to verify my shipping address and the same yes or no question. The conversation ends.

Today, I was going through my cards and found out that the one ending with 8338 expired a long time ago. I just remembered that I threw that card out. I don't have my numbers memorized. However, I do remember one of my cards ending with 8338, so I thought it was from my card company.

Now, I'm scared that those telemarketers will use my "yes" answers to sign me up for other services. I heard about this kind of thing in the news. Isn't it illegal for telemarketers to trick consumers into thinking that they are from another company? Damn. I should have paid more attention. What can I do?

Uggghh, NEVER EVER even say the word "yes" when talking to telemarketers.

When they call my house for ANY reason i say "i refuse to do business over the phone, goodbye" *click*

is the credit card account closed? if so, i wouldn't worry about it

if not, you need to WRITE a letter to them immedietly letting them know what happened and to close the account or change the number or something

good luck!

That's nine more words than I say.

Someone suggested before to ask to put them on hold for a second, put them on hold and not pick back up. :) I've done it once.

"Now why would I want to receive your special offer when I'm just going to kill myself after this phone call?"

I have Caller ID. It always says "Out Of Area" when a telemarketer calls. When I see those words, I don't answer. F TM's!

I know what I will be saying next time. I should have paid more attention. Damn.

I found the card that is mentioned in this thread. I stashed it away in one of my drawers along time ago. I was cleaning my room and there it was.

I remember now why I stashed that card. It was compromised a while back. I received a letter from my bank telling me about the problem and that they would gladly replace it. However, the card says it is good thru 10/04. I'm definitely calling my bank this Friday and ask them if the card has been deactivated after being replaced.

Thanks for the tips!

I always tell telemarketers that I have to consult with the other voices in my head before the doctor comes back for me. They usually hang up after that one.

We have Privacy Manager on our main line from Ameritech... if its a unknown caller then they get a automated message asking for their name and company name and who their calling for..... most telemarketers dont take the time. Phone rings alot less now... it used to ring a every 15 min.

I don't answer, but on the odd chance I get one I sometimes entertain them with the thought of them actually making the sale but always make it ABSOLUTELY clear that I'm not interested a couple minutes down the road. That or I just hang up, depends on the mood.
