Help transferring files to new PC without formatting?

Okay so this is my problem.

I'm getting my new system and I want to keep my files on my current harddrive and just use it with my new system. What do I have to do to do that? Is there a program I need? Do I need to do anything technical? Because I don't want to redownload all my Steam games and patches for games. I'll be getting an additional WD 80GB 8mb Cache 7200RPM HD if that helps. But I really need help please.

There's an AT FAQ on how to change motherboards without reformatting; essentially, you just do a "Repair Install" instead of a full reinstall, then reinstall all your hardware. Works like a charm.

You'll still need to reinstall all your Windows patches and drivers, though. You *could* try just removing all your devices in Device Manager, putting the drive in the new system, and booting up, but this is somewhat less reliable.

Oh okay. Is that guaranteed to work?
