HELP! Transfer rate decreasing to nothing

So i built a new computer, windows xp sp3, and got everything up and running. After transferring some data over to the new drive, I started to transfer more data over and the transfer rate was less than 1 Kb/s. The internet was slow too! The file transfer was over the local LAN.


I am puzzled and have no idea why this happened.. is it a bad motherboard?

check the lan card settings and be sure you are set to Auto Negotiate on the connection speed.

Homemade cables would cause this or a cabling/driver problem as well.

was there anything else going on over the network? I know when ppl kick up torrents it kills my router, even locally.
