Help, torrent software is using 100% of my CPU!

So I decided to switch to uTorrent 1.6 a few days ago when I noticed it was released...almost immediately I started noticing slowdowns and generally sluggish performance in games and desktop apps but couldn't figure out what was causing it. Checked out the task manager and it looks like uTorrent is hovering between 80-99% CPU usage at all times. I tried switching back to version 1.5 (it had been working perfectly for as long as I can recall) and strangely enough it is now using just as much CPU power. I also tried using BitTornado instead and it is also using way too much CPU power. The FAQ on the uTorrent site suggests that it could be a firewall/anti-virus problem but I don't use a firewall and disabling AVG did not help. I'm running XP Pro SP2 with regular adelphia broadband and a netgear WGR614 router. The only changes I have made recently that I can think of have been updating my nvidia forceware drivers, installing ms .net framework 1.1, running a registry cleaner (been using it for ages) uninstalling java as well as some random games. My laptop, which also has .net framework as well as most of the same software as this computer runs these torrent programs fine and uses a normal amount of CPU power. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?

Nope, but I don't think that is the problem because it takes up full CPU power even when I just open the program and have not connected to any peers yet as well as when I'm on inactive torrents.
