help thunderbird slow

When i goto read my mail in thunderbird v 1.06. it load slowly, also when i goto delete my mail, it takes forever to delete the mail. Like when i goto click on one email then goto another one, it takes like 15 seconds before the software will switch to the other email. I do have microsoft office 2003 install on my computer. Im not sure if micorosft outlook 2003 is conflicting with thunderbird or what? should id just reinstall the software and see if that works?

Have you compacted your folders lately?

Are you using IMAP? It can get pretty slow when there's a lot of email.
