hElP! This computer won't save or load files

I'm working on a computer that freezes whenever I use the save/open pop-up box in programs and on the desktop. The box partially opens, then freezes, requiring a re-boot to get back to normal. If anyone has any ideas to try I'd appreciate it. Thanks,
