The computer was working fine it has never showed any indication of possible problems. Put it together maybe 4 months ago. Today I went to turn it one and it wont move past the post screen...it just gets stuck, no response to keys, wont let me enter bios, doesn't sound like it is doing anything (cpu or hard drive), etc.

I tried a different keyboard.
I tried clearing the cmos
I checked to ensure the fans are running. Case and CPU fan running fine.
I connected a speaker to the MB (get the 1 short beep which means according to manual "system boots successfully")

I doubt it is the memory or the hard drive
I don't know if it could be the cpu but my experience with failed cpu's, memory, or hd's has never produced this result.

Unfortunately this is the only DDR2, Intel machine I have in the house so I can't swap cpu or mem.

****As I was typing this I heard another single / short beep...it has been about 5 mins since initial turn on. Trouble shooting guide for beeps: "continuous short beeps" = power error. I don't think 5 minutes qualifies as continuous.

What do you think? Time to RMA the MB? Thanks

well, need some info 1st.

System manufacturer and Exact Model(if name Brand):
Service Tag (if Dell):
Motherboard Manufacturer with Model and BIOS Revision:
CPU Manufacturer and Model:
RAM Manufacturer and Model:
PSU Manufacturer and Model:

one thing you can try is turn the system off, pull the memory one at a time and replace them making sure they are snapped in.

My own build

Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R
Intel e4300
Patriot PC6400 2GB single module PEP22G6400EL
Antec True Power Trio 550

I have never noticed any throttling and the temps have always been low on the cpu.

The only thing I can probably do is swap memory slots being that it is a single module.

well something you can do is go to http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ and burn the iso to a cd and reboot and run memtest86+ overnight, once we get it to go past POST.

I'll check on the info and see if i come up with anything.

also, what had you done before this started? any new Hardware or software or drivers?

so, you haven't been able to get into BIOS since this started, ever?

Nope not a single hardware change since build. No driver updates for a couple of months.

Yep, wouldn't get into bios...just snagged on the post screen no matter what I tried.

But I finally tried swapping the memory to the other channel (1) and got it to boot...all the way to windows.

OK great...I figure that maybe channel 0 died but when I swapped it back it also booted (now I am really confused). One thing I noticed is that the cpu fan was acting weird now...it was sputtering upon start up. I tweaked the fan control from low to high but it didn't really change much. It wasn't until I went into the bios to chk pc health and did an exit w/o saving that it rev'd up as if it was actually getting the proper juice. I hadn't any fan issues becuase I usually always have it set low and never noticed any temp problems.

Then on one attempt to exit bios and save...the computer didn't like that and gave me three beeps (continuous long beeps means "video card not seated properly") which makes no sense. Anyways, sometimes the fan runs properly and sometimes it doesn't (half power like)...this makes me think it is either PSU or motherboard I guess. The voltages seem to be steady in bios and windows monitor.

I doubt a MB bios update would be the remedy for such a weird issue/problem that I have never had before that has come out of nowhere. I dont think I want to try a bios update with the system being so finicky right now anyways. I was ready to insert my ubcd and run a memtest but I don't think I need to go that route with the latest developments with the weird cpu fan speeds/power.

Any good power supply testers out there? I don't know, guess I should start with the PSU though. I should probably just buy a new one and RMA the current one for a spare. Any suggestions? Thanks again.

okay, try reaseating the video card and all memory modules, and the power for the motherboard and video card.

I'd also run UBCD overnight to be sure. also you can download http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php and use it to check the power and temp settings, if you could post a screenshot of that, I'd be much appreciative.

1 strange test result

running SP2004: which ever cpu I start last gets stuck in page mode when running the blend (cpu and ram tests run normally)

****nm I guess it is just the version I was using...with orthos I don't get the problem. Back to the drawing board.

Power and temp settings are fine in cpuid. I rand UBCD memtest 86+ overnight with no errors.

Fan still runs half power like: it runs from about 200 to 650 rpm when it should be running from ~400-1300 but everything else seems back to normal, I am not getting the sputtering fan I was getting. I did update to the latest non beta bios. I am going to try the stock intel fan.

I really think if it is anything, it is the UPS or the MB.

how old is the UPS? how good is the electrical wiring in the house/apartment?
also, if we could see the temps, we could tell you if they are normal or not.

Well PC wizard gives me erroneous readings on the cpu core clock.

Anyways, I tried a new power supply and no change. I also tried the stock intel cpu fan but still got the same results...about half speed. I looked at the box for my thermaltake V1 and that specs fan speed at 1300 - 2000 rpm. So I guess I am at 1/3 power really. Anyways...my next move is to RMA the MB...I think I have done enough troubleshooting.
