maxtor 250gb IDE internal drive
formatted in NTFS
in an external case connected via firewire/usb2
(it does both, but i usually use firewire)

i've been using this drive for about a month now.
transferring files between my laptop and desktop.

until tonight, it worked flawlessly... and served my needs quite well.

tonight, though, it was working fine at one moment, and then the drive went

[the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable]

on me.

i've tried chkdsk... it's a no go. i get an error message, and can't run chkdsk

i've tried to look up in disk manager. and i see that the drive is set inactive and unformatted.

🙁

currently i'm running GetDataBack for NTFS v2.3 ... hoping to recover and backup.
but it seems to be taking it's time browsing through 250gb.

in case, it does't work... is there something else that you guys recommend?

thanx in advance for your help.

You may want to try hooking the drive up on the IDE BUS to see if
can be read properly.

A lot of external (usb\firewire) drive mfg claim you can hot swap them, but WinXP is
very touchy with removables (Win2k is much more forgiving) and will corrupt if not
properly disconnected (stopping the device before disconnecting).

thanks for the input.
there are some valuable data on that drive...
and i know... i should've backed up the data...
but i just had it uploaded few days ago. 🙁

i'm going to try to recover these files first then play around with the drive to recover without reformatting.
