Help! Talking an elder out of a dell...

To start, I know dell's aren't bad....but I know you can get more bang for your buck, easily.

[Since when does 1 gig of ram cost $700 on a notebook? Seriously...]

The only other place i really know of is cyberpower and I'm not having any luck with him there....any ideas?

I would do it myself....but I'm not up for toying around with his money 😛

Whats' the best site for....prebuilt notebooks?

It doesn't need to be superlight weight...

remember notebooks are much more different than desktops....you cant build them yourself...parts and repairs are expensive and most of all dell offers extended warranties whereas these smaller shops are not as comprehensive...and trust me extended warranties are worth it on notebooks ..try and get a good deal from ibm, toshiba, dell and then hp/compaq (in that order) before looking at smaller vendors

DotheDamnTHing hit the nail right on the head.

Things like RAM tend to cost more from such vendors, but don't worry much, there. If you need 1GB, just get one with 256MB or 512MB that has the CPU and HD you'll need, and buy more RAM.

Check that Dell allows you to add RAM under warranty (I think they should do), then go for the base model in terms of RAM, and add the extra yourself.

If the elder is willing to get less bang for the buck, then the question might be the quality of tech support. How is Cyberpower's tech support?

Definitely go with a big company like Dell or IBM for a notebook. Eventually, you will love the fact that you have a nice long warranty under which Dell will fix just about anything that goes wrong. As for the RAM, just order 128MB and add more later. You could probably do the same for the hard drive if you want. Just make sure that you get a nice long warranty.

If the elder actually needs 1 GB (why?), just get the laptop with 128 - 256 and then use the memory selector at www.Crucial.com

I'd personally much rather have an IBM, Toshiba, or Dell that you'll be able to get repairs and possibly upgrades (if one with mini-card video) vs. a no-name generic laptop that won't have any support 6 months after it's built.

Buy the dell with less Ram and then upgrade the RAM to 1 gig urself if needed becauz 700 for a gig of ram is outrageous.

Sounds good.

The reason it needs a decent amount of ram is for games and such...its mainly a work computer though.

Does anyone know what MoBo the dell notebooks come with? They dont let you choose anywhere...

I suppose I've proved my cluelessness once again!

Cheers!

What games? Only the most demanding games need that much RAM. Make sure the GPU won't be a bottleneck. I am not su sure Dell notebooks are high-powered gaming machines (I have not looked at notebooks recently)

That's because you don't pick the mobo. You pick the notebook, there is no option for making these kinds of customizations in a notebook. Most you can usually customise is RAM, hard drive, optical drive, and on higher-end models GPU.
