HELP!! "System Restore" vs. "Restore Files"

Normally I'd just figure this out myself but there's alot on the line for a friend of mine and I don't want to take any chances. His stocks etc. trading program crashed and the file that contains his trading algorithms become corrupted. Personally I never use this Windows feature so before I do anything I want to be 100% sure I get it right. He has both system restore and options and "Restore Files" under "Backup and Restore" I'm not 100% sure that system restore restores non-system files...

Thanks in advance.

Before you do ANYTHING to the disk, clone the hard disk to another disk. Then work on the clone. Or do any file restores to another hard drive.

Windows "System Restore" only restores the Registry and Windows system files. At least that was true with XP and I don't believe that changed (but I haven't played with it since I moved to Windows Home Server at the same time as I moved to Vista so I use WHS for any backups or recoveries). And, depending on exactly which version of Windows did the Backup, it may not have backed up what you need, either.

EXACTLY what version of Windows (like Vista/Home Premium) was used and, if there was more than one type of backup offered, which one was chosen?

Also, some versions of Windows offer "Previous Versions" that might contain older copies of certain files.

If a safe solution isn't forthcoming, you might also consider professional data recovery services. Which is one reason for not touching the original disk.

Thanks, It's Windows 7 64 Bit and what you said about System restore is What I was afraid of. I'll Clone it and try "Restore Files"

You may also want to contact the company that produced the trading software as they may be able to assist in recovery of his data. The software could also produce a backup file in another location that isn't immediately obvious to the end user.

Once he is back up and running, you really need to push your friend into investing in some form of system backup software that he will actually use. Anybody that handles important financial matters on a computer system without a strictly followed backup regimen is literally playing Russian roulette with their money, pure and simple, every time they press the power button on that computer.
