help......system resources disappearing!

ok..never ever have i had this happen to me. i start up my PC and it boots fine....after about 2-3 mins everything starts to slow down...i checked under system properties/performance and it says 55% free. i dont even have anyhting running except for icq and yahoo messaging.
my system is this:
  • 1.4 gig athlon
  • soyo k7v dragon
  • 384megs of pc2100
  • 2-15gig hdds
  • HP Cdrw
  • 32X cdrom
  • radeaon VE
  • floppy
i have defragged..ive never had this happen before so i dont know what to do!!!

icq and yahoo messenging would account for some of that but not 45% of your resources, is there anything running in the background that you dont know of. you might want to check that. in win2k its really easy to tell. just right click on the task bar and go to task manager.

in win98 or winme, you could try control + alt + delete and just view what is running
 
i just did msconfig..a whole lotta crap..i forgot about the ATI thingy in the systray. still only at 73% with my icq and yahoo and enterne running

All running programs claim resource stack space, and some evil programs don't give it back when they're closed. Gradual shrinkage of resources leads to slowing down, and eventually the OS crawls to a halt. Can be tracked by running Resource Meter in the background. Only way to reclaim resources is to reboot. This is a good reason to upgrade to win2k, whose resource stacks are very much larger.
