The system, Athlon XP1700+, FIC AU11, 512MB Crucial PC2700 GeForce 4200 w/128MB, 120MB Maxtor HD, Windows XP, etc etc

The problem, went to bed last night and left computer on downloading with the monitor off, all was normal. This morning turned on monitor and nothing happened. The power light stayed amber for sleep mode rather than green for on. Tried moving and clicking mouse to awaken system, no go. Checked mouse, a USB Logitech optical and there was no light. Replaced mouse with an older MS serial mouse, still no go. Reboot system, monitor stays amber light and won't go to green. Uh-oh. Disconnect monitor, it then flashes to on with the "no connection" message flashing. Plug the monitor back into the video card and it reverts back to an amber light with no display. Double uh-oh.

Troubleshoot by swapping a monitor and video card with a system that I know is working. Same thing, the newly installed monitor and card stay at amber when the monitor is plugged into the card and it powers up to green with the "no connection" message when unplugged. Meanwhile my monitor and GeForce work fine when tried in another system, so that's not the problem. Tested my memory in another system and it's okay, tested working memory from another system in all 3 banks of mine with the same result, monitor stays amber.

Disconnected all drives keeping good video card and memory hooked up to see if some other hardware was bad hoping it would POST. Nope, stayed amber even with all other hardware isolated. Took everything apart, checked all connections, removed heat sink to check CPU. No evidence of overheating or burning, reinstalled HSF with some new arctic silver and tried to POST again. Nope, still amber light on the monitor with no display. Unattach monitor and it goes to full on with the "no connection" and it reverts back to amber when reattached.

When the other drives are hooked up when booting the lights on the drives flash in the proper sequence, so it's going through the progression. The video card is good as it's been tested in another system and the AGP slot is getting power since the video card fan spins. All the system fans work and the drives are getting power, so it's no the power supply. If it was a hard drive failure I'd still have a display and would be able to see the error message.

Is it my motherboard, the CPU or did I miss something?

Any beep codes? If your computers beeps normally after the diagnostic screen, it means everything is fine and something is wrong with just the display. If this is the case, try getting a PCI video card and see how that works out.

I'm going to take a guess and say it's the motherboard. Even with a different card or monitor, the problem is still occurring, so the common denominator is the motherboard. Sounds like maybe the AGP slot has had enough. I don't think the CPU is bad. If it was, there would be some beeping going on when you try to boot.

I think your best bet is to replace the motherboard. By the way, nice job with the systematic troubleshooting.

Good idea on testing with a PCI card, unfortunately I don't have one. No strange beep codes, so I guess some parts of the motherboard have fried while others are working.

Looks like its time for a new MB.
