Hi guys, is there anything I can check or do myself to try to figure out? We've lived here for a few years, and all of a sudden this afternoon we are not getting ANY water, hot or cold, from all sources in our home. Kitchen sink, bathroom sink, shower, toilet, and the washer machine.

I don't know how water "interfaces" with residential units. I know there are cable television access boxes, gas meters, power meters, etc. As far as I can tell, water is completely hidden and I have no idea where to go to check for something. In our utility closet (laundry machines, furnace, fuse box and water heater) there are pipes that I presume are water, but they just travel from wall to wall. There's nothing for me to mess around with as far as they go.

Residents are not responsible for the water bill, the condo association pays for that.

Any ideas? I called the condo association "emergency" number but apparently emergencies don't apply to Sunday. Not being able to take a dump FTL.

SOLVED: The association somehow found out that the downstairs neighbor went on vacation for a week, starting yesterday. So they decided to drill her locks out (lol) and gained access to her place. She turned her water off (for a summer vacation??... WTF) and shut our water off in the process.

Look for shut off valves in basement or outside wall of building.

Turn yours back on.

No basement (that I know of), and I've searched the entire perimeter of the building, looking for anything that might be a water valve and no dice. I'll go check again.

The valve is likely accessible since someone turned it off on you.

Ok, condo handyman guy was here this morning. We DO have a shutoff valve in our utility closet, but it was on the floor basically under the washing machine so I couldn't see it. He pulled the washer out, and determined that the valve is open (obviously) and that there's no flow coming to that point. So the water is either shutoff at a point before that somewhere, or there's a blockage, etc. The water pipes feed into our unit from the downstairs neighbor. Naturally she isn't home and they have to give 24 hrs. notice before entering a resident's unit for a repair issue. So it won't be fixed until tuesday morning, at the earliest.

brb, pooping at Wendy's again.

wow, that would be incredibly poor planning if a neighbor is able to turn your water off. Also, why doesn't the condo handyman know how the water pipes are routed?

How can you not have water when you have internet? There's obviously something flowing thru the pipes.

The 24 hours notice doesn't apply to emergency repairs. Being you are without water and that is pretty much a necessity, the landlord should be able to access. The problem is it doesn't sound like the landlord is sure where your master cut off is.

In general though it's easy to turn one's water off at the house or even at the street with the right tool...some older developments actually have normal hand cranked valves at the street.

Maybe that's why the water doesn't work - the pipes are all clogged up with wires!

if the whole building is out.... maybe call your property manager or the water department/public works today?

You could call the city. In most places, water is considered a vital service to the residence and the landlord is required by law to make sure that service works properly.
Your profile doesn't say where you live, so check your local city, county, and state ordinances and laws.

Most states offer some kind of renter's rights website.

this

It's a necessity to live. Tell them you need access now or you'll file a complaint.

She must be a foreclosure victim...that's what you do in a house, lol.
