Earlier this week, I started having boot problems. I was getting "smears" and artifacts on the screen - during Windows startup, BIOS screens, etc, followed by total freezing of my system - obviously not driver problems, as it was before Windows even loaded. This all would prevent Windows from loading, and at times, even keep me from saving BIOS settings (freezing before I could). The problem got worse when I would restart, at which point my computer wouldn't even POST. My monitor would remain blank, and I'd have to restart several times before it would (randomly) finally boot up all the way to Windows.
Starting today, I couldn't even get that far.
So, after much research, tweaking, rebuilding, yelling and swearing, I have found the culprit to be my GeForce 2 GTS card in my ABIT KT7-RAID. But there's a twist....
The GeForce2 works perfectly in another computer (PIII, Intel mobo). And my Voodoo3 allows my computer (Athlon 1GHz, ABIT KT7-RAID) to work perfectly fine as well. Furthermore, I've been using this exact GeForce2 and ABIT motherboard without problems for over a year!
I haven't changed anything major, and am even trying all of this on a freshly formatted hard drive (as well as trying on my old HDD w/ Windows installed -- same results with both). I thought maybe my GeForce2 overheated or just ran out of juice or something.... but since it works perfectly fine in another computer, the video card is obviously fine. So I thought maybe my AGP slot was screwed up, or that maybe my power supply or motherboard could have been fried.... but again, since another video card allows my PC to run fine, those are obviously not at fault either. And the fact that the GeForce2 + ABIT have always been fine, yet all of a sudden started having these immense problems, just makes this all the more frustrating and confusing.
If anyone has any idea what the sudden problem could be with my video card in my system, I'd appreciate anything you've got. I've tried everything I could find (yes, the video card is seated firmly
), but I'm at a loss here. Any help would be great!
Thanks!
