Help Spyware

Ok.i am new at this so i might not get all the technical jargon. heres the situation about a week ago i started my computer and on my desktop picture was gone and replaced with a message that says my computer is infected with spyware.i have windows 2000 by the way.i cant change the picture on the desktop.also have a little red circle with a white X in my toolbar at the bottom right hand of the screen.i ran a spyware catcher program a friend gave me and it found spyware but i still cant get the above problems to go away.so my question is what do i do next.how do i get rid of these problems.any help will be really appreciated.
