help solve my problem that nobody else can

my comp is directly hooked up to my modem. i have DSL and never had any problems before. at random times throughout the day/night my internet will lag like hell. sites will load VERY slow and timeout sometimes, and i get 50000 ping in vent.

the odd thing is if i'm playing cs:s/ag my ping will stay low and i dont get any lag at all. i can also download from sites (such as my server) and max out my download speed. talking on aol/mirc is also fine.

when sites do load ultra slow and my vent ping is high coolmon says my in/out is barely over 0 kb/sec.. which i guess means no activity is happening for whatever reason. i tried formatting and running anti-virus and it still happens. i also tried pinging the vent server IP during the huge lag spikes and it says 23ms for all 3 or 4 tests :[

thanks!

It's either the ISP, or somewhere out on the net there's some other carrier that's got some lag on their servers.

You can easily find where the problem is. Open a command prompt and type traceroute www.domain.com, replacing www.domain.com with whatever site you're lagging to, or IP address. When you see the ms count jump suddenly, that's where the performance problem is. Since it's happening with some programs and not others, it's likely that it's some carrier out past your ISP, either a direct peer or something farther that's causing the problem, so that only traffic that takes a certain path depending on the destination is affected.

I've been seeing this the last week or so myself, but all I'm doing is browsing the web so I don't know if I'd see it with other apps.

There could just be some major new spammer operating and clogging up the pipes. Or maybe somebody with a gambling addiction discovered the Internet.
