Help: Socket A History

Does anyone know the complete history of socket ?A? starting at the first 550MHz Athlon? I seem to remember the ThunderBirds came out at 100MHz FSB and I don?t know what the difference was from the original Athlon. Then came the ?C? (133FSB) ThunderBirds and so on. I would love to see a complete history of AMD?s tremendous commitment to this Socket ?A? because it will end with the Thoroughbred core at XP+ 2800.

Athlons started around 500mhz on Slot A. I think they went to socket A after they hit 1ghz with the classic athlon.
I can't remember how low the Thunderbirds go, or if there were Slot A thunderbirds. Can anybody clear this up for me?
 
The first Athlon`s (slot A`s) started at 500mhz and went to 1Ghz... The "B" designations were based on the .25 micron process and had 512k cache. The "C" designations were based on the .18 micron process and were 256k cache (I think...?) The socket A Tbirds started at either 700 or 750mhz...? (possibly lower...?) They went up to 1.4ghz in a 100fsb version then the 266fsb came out starting with a 1Ghz cpu and ended at a 1.4Ghz version and from there the MP & XP cores took over...


I may have missed some info along the way but thats the best memory serves these days...? 🙂 Anyone else correct me if need be...?


Oh BTW I think slot A with "A" designations were based on the .31 micron process...? Older and ran mighty hot...?

According to Anand's article here. They were at .25um.

Other wise your memory serves you better than mine.
 
according to what i know - the first athlons started at 500mhz.
the processors were manufactured with two proccesses. the 0.25 micron processors were given the the cpu tag "C" the 0.18 micron micron processors were given the cpu tag "A"(http:/www4.tomshardware.com/howto/00q2/000412/index-01).

later AMD launched athlons with higher FSB's and lower multipliers-eg.for a 1ghz proc.

fsb x multipliers= proc speed
100 x 10 = 1000
133 x 7.5 = 1000

AMD changed the numbering of the new fsb processors so that they could be differenciated.

There were a number of Slot A Thunderbirds from 750mhz - 1000mhz but these were special release OEM processors
