Hi, I got a Free SMC 16 ports 10/100 switch last time from buy.com in white box.
But this switch came with an European style power plug. We used a standard computer power cable and the unit does power up but none of the workstations can communicate with each other, even though we get green lights. We also rolled the Cat 5 cables to the retail SMC unit which came with a standard U.S. power cable and everything works fine. We rolled the Cat 5 cables back to the first unit and nothing works again.

Any one can tell me how to solve this problem? I remember I had seen some one here mentioned this
problem before, but I forgot the solution.

Please advise.

Thanks very much

This is probably going to get locked, but let me respond before it does:

Sounds like you need to get a 220v/110v adapter. If you're shoving a 110v electric cable into the switch then its probably no wonder why things aren't working the way it should. Head down to your local electronics shop to find the adapter.

Never encourage anyone to break the rules. Kindly explain to them where they should go to get help and send them on their way.

My SMC product uses a 100-240 VAC transformer, it figures out what it is getting and changes it to 5V. Look on the 'brick' part of the transformer and see that input voltage it requires. That will tell you if it is the wrong transformer/cable, or if its the unit.

What if you use the retail SMC tranformer on the White-box switch? does the white-box one work?

ADDED: never tell ME what to do, and move on (unless you are a Mod.). Why does everyone think they are the Mod. on these boards?!

Hgabriel:

I'm not "encouraging" anything.

He's probably going to get flamed really hard for (God forbid) posting in the incorrect ATech forum. Guy has a problem, so I'm merely suggesting a remedy before someone lights a match. No offense but I didn't see any kind explanations or guided help on your post either.
