Help! Short circuit somewhere?

I have a 93 BMW 325is which has an odd intermittent problem. Sometimes when I turn the key to start the car, it would kill the electrical system. Nothing works after that. Totally dead. Weird thing is. to "revive" the car, I would need to open and shut the door. I am not sure if opening the door resets the electricals, or just the fact that slamming the door somehow shakes the system operational again. Sometimes I need to do this several times.

Any ideas what this problem is?
