I am starting to shop for PDA's or Palm Pilots. I've never even looked into these before, wondering the basic ins and outs of the 8MBs versus all the more expensive bigger ones. Is there a most recommended manufacturer out there? Features that are totally neccessary that don't always come with the cheaper models? Any input will be mucho appreciated.

Here's a couple things to think about, though I'm by no means a PDA "enthusiast." I don't really know the current state of the market very well, but these are some general principles that may help.

Like computers, different models have varying processors and memory. The need for these depends a lot on what you'll be doing with it - more speed means you can run more complex and powerful programs. If you're just going to keep a calendar and an address book, then this doesn't matter at all. As with laptops, consider power use - color screens take up more power. Also, some cheaper models run on AAA batteries, which don't last very long. Then there's also the whole internet connectivity issue, which I don't know a whole lot about.

Personally, I use the Palm m500 - more power than the entry-level Palms, b/w screen, no internet stuff. I'm a teacher, and run a couple programs that set up customizable databases for grades, contact numbers and logs, etc. along with the usual calendar and address/phone lists. Even on the slightly more powerful processor, the programs take a little time to run and search - for me, the cheaper, lower-speed models would take too long to be working with while talking with parents or working in the classroom. I don't need the color screen for anything, and the b/w screen along with the Li-Ion battery mean that, if I'm really lazy, I can go close to a month without recharging. Mind you, I don't play Solitaire on it in my free time either - just business, thank you. I absolutely don't need to pay a monthly fee to get crappy, low-res internet or mail access, so the expensive Palm VII was out from the start. All in all, the unit works exceptionally well for me - well worth the ~$300 or so I paid for it.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

I have owned win ce 2.11, ppc 2000 as well as 3 palm pdas, let me tell you the palms take it. Go for a refurb visor deluxe from handspring, its about 100$ and does the basic pda things really well. Or you could pay 30$ more for a platinum. Gethightech sells palm Vx's refurbished for 140$ but while they have form factor, they dont have expandability. For basics palm is better then anyone else, for higher end stuff go with a pocket pc device, they are expensive though :(

You might want to look at the Sony Clie S360. It apprears to be one of the best bargin PDA's out there now. 16MB ram, very good screen, the best backlight I've seen on a palmOS Pda (It lights up like a watch face, the whole thing glows green. In most other Monocrome palms, just the text lights up. The Sony is much easier to see) jog dial, Memory stick support, which while pricy, is pretty darn fast. It also has OS 4. All in all, very impressive at its $170 or so. I was just announced and should be making its way to stores shortly. I have the S320, which is exactly the same as the S360 aside from the internal memory, and I love it!

The jog dial is espicaly useful, making one hand operation a definitate possibility. Like you can look up a phone number really quickly by just using the jog dial. Its a nice system.

Oh, and the S360 has a rechargable LiPolymer battery. If you can find all of those features on a handheld that costs around $200, I'd like to see it ;)
