Okay, I have 2 pc's running XP. The main box is attached to a typical highspeed cable modem. I installed an additional network card in that machine, and a card in a second slower PC. I have an old, long crossover cable to connect those two network cards to each other.

I forget what network settings I need to change on those two cards to allow the 2nd slow PC to access the internet through the 1st fast PC.

Help, please?

...and many thanks! :)

I suggest buying a home router and hooking it to the cable modem. It's a lot less troublesome than trying to rely on ICS in Windows. Pretty much any router will do for most users. And it's much more secure than hooking a PC directly to a cable modem. That went out of style several years ago, with all the nasty stuff exploring the Internet now.

Simply hook up all the PCs to the LAN ports on the router and all will receive Internet and will be able to see each other on your network (if file and printer sharing is enabled).

The feature is called ICS i believe. If you google that it should be pretty straight forward.

Some time it can turn into an option if it goes for $9,99 after rebate.

Otherwise you asked for this, http://practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ :disgust:

We don't all live in the USA, y'know. Yes a router may be cheap but I can't justify its purchase if I can simply do it with the equipment I already have. I have to at least try that route first.

Thanks for the link... looks good.

You come to a hardware forum, you're likely to get hardware answers. A router simply makes setup, security, and future maintenance much easier, which is why people are recommending it.

Here's what you do:

Set the IP on the modem to 192.168.1.1 with a subnet of 255.255.255.252.
Set the IP on the NIC of the first computer connected to the modem to 192.168.1.2 with a subnet of 255.255.255.252 and a gateway of 192.168.1.1. Use the nameservers 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2.
Set the IP of the NIC of the first computer connected to the other computer via crossover cable to 192.168.1.5 with a subnet of 255.255.255.252.
Set the IP of the NIC in the second computer to 192.168.1.6 with a subnet of 255.255.255.252 and a default gateway of 192.168.1.5. Use the nameservers 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2.
Enable Internet Connection Sharing on the first computer to go from the first NIC to the second NIC.

Presto.

Well, he can't do that because he has a cable modem. His "server" PC will have some public IP address on its external-facing NIC, as he'll be connected directly to the Internet with no NAT or external firewall for protection.

Ok, then skip the first two items and proceed with the last three and you'll be set.

If you click on "Help and Support" in XP, and search for ICS, there's a step-by-step procedure on how to set it up.

I have been using ICS for many trouble free years. Just get a good software firewall on each PC and get rid of any need for a router. Its the cheapest way to go IMHO.

I too have never been in an accident but I do usually wear a seatbelt. Recently I forgot to wear my seatbelt, did not get in an accident, but I still got a $25.00 ticket for no seatbelt.

Somehow I don't think hanging a router plastic Jesus would make any difference.

Why buy a piece of hardware without a reason that it helps?
