I'm having an argument with my girlfriend about wether or not the US Government owns the US Postal Service. I say they no longer do but the only info I can find to back it up is that the Postmaster General position was elimintated from the cabinet in 1998. I know they still regulate them, but i'm pretty sure they are no longer Government owned.

Can anybody help us prove that the US Government does or doesn't own the post office.

Thanks.

Still ownd by the gov't. IIRC,That's why a raise in the cost of stamps must be approved by congress.

They are still owned by the government but not in the same way as when it was created. They restructured it years ago and made it into more of a corporation than a government agency.

Even if they aren't owned by the government doesn't mean that the govenment can't regulate prices. Look at electricity.

Can anybody help me find a link for proof?

Thanks.

Postal reform

Excerpt:
In May 1969, four months after he became a member of President Richard Nixon's Cabinet, Postmaster General Winton M. Blount proposed a basic reorganization of the Post Office Department. The President asked Congress to pass the Postal Service Act of 1969, calling for removal of the Postmaster General from the Cabinet and creation of a self-supporting postal corporation wholly owned by the federal government

and if you were wondering, there HAS been an increasing motion to privatize the USPS. I don't know how good of an idea that would be.

USPS should be privatized. How many people rely on the USPS as the sole means of PERSONAL contact? w/ telephone, email etc there is no longer reason to have a publicly owned and operated USPS. Look how much fedex and UPS has already eaten into USPS territory. the USPS should be privatized and forced to compete. HOWEVER, the govt should still maintain addressing schemes. the ZIP CODES etc should still be maintained by the government.

Heres a funny girlfriend story: We were in a park in Ann Arbor Mi walking along a path near a river and the path opened up onto a field with play equiptment and such, right where it opened up they had taken tree sections (from trunk) and made them into a fanned out pathway kind of like an entryway to the park, I looked at her and said "pretty cool, huh" and she replied "very, but how did they get them to grow so close together?"

3 years and two months later we were married.:)
