I need some help to settle a bet. This guy I know is convinced that a thunderbird is not the same thing as an Athlon. I need pictures to prove it to him (packaging, boxing, etc.) thanks.

Athlon with "cache technology" or some PR BS = Thunderbird.

Any Socket AMD Athlon is a Thunderbird.

First, look here, and remember this quote:

<<The Thunderbird will still use the name Athlon>>

The thunderbird is an updated version of the Athlon. Thunderbird was the codename used while the updated version of the Athlon was still in development. For all purposes, they (Athlon/Tbird) are the same thing.

You have to remember though, that there are differences between the two. The 'classic' Athlon had off-die cache, and was in slot form. The new Athlons, or Thunderbirds, have on-die cache, and use a socketed form.

It may sound stupid but the prize is a "slinky"; not the trademark one but a piece off scrap-unexpanded aluminum honeycomb, which was free. They are a lot of fun for those annoying times otherise all waking hours.

Its like this: Is a P3 and a P3E the same thing; ie. a pentium 3? Yes, the P3e/b is merely a different version but inherently both are P3's - the same applies here. A thunderbird most definitely is an athlon.

but this is so much better than a slinky; it looks like a solid metal block but then its all bendy-flex and spiftacular.

It's just like a Coppermine or Katmai is the same as a PIII, just a different codenamed chip.

Hey, Moose -- Can I get in on your side of the bet?

A Thunderbird is:

A Ford car of various styles and vintages.
A hotel/casino in Las Vegas
A brand of cheap dreadful substance they still manage to call wine.
.
.
.
.
and the fastet current production Athlon from AMD.

Here are links to some of Anand's T-Bird reviews: :D

AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 1 GHz / 800 MHz

AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 1.1 GHz

AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 1.2 GHz & Duron 800 MHz

My e-mail addy is in my profile, so let me know when you're sending my 1.2 GHz T-bird (my share of our winnings). ;)

OK -- I'll settle for a 1 GHz chip and OC it. :D :D

I am the one who made the bet. I already gave him a picture of a T-Bird and he still didn't believe me. He wants a picture of the box. Does anyone have a picture of a T-Bird box they could send me. Thanks in advance.

The simple answer is not all Athlons are T'birds, but all T'birds are Athlons (unless Durons are consided to have T'bird cores to, only with less on-chip L2 cache).

So you are wrong MajesticMoose, saying that T'birds are the same as Athlons is like sayings dogs are the same thing as animals.

Depends on how you look at. Its an Athlon, but, its a Thunderbird Athlon. If you went to a store that still sold Classic Athlons and wanted a T-Bird,but asked for a Athlon, you might be a little upset when you got home. So you are both right.

Slinkys for all.

Show him a Athlon box retail socket A processor in the 1.2 Mhz range and since the thunderbird is in a socket A form and slot A form while classic is in the slot form, find somewhere that says socket A on the box and you have it made.

DABANSHEE: Actually, I would be the one that is wrong. I am the one who made the bet.

The person I made the bet with was claiming that the Thunder Bird is NOT an Athlon. I got the proof from Bunta and will show him tomorrow. I know he will not pay up but I AM going to make him admit that he is wrong.

BTW, thanks Mike. :)

I got news for you friend. T birds came in slot A as well as socket A. I have built them. The cpu was stamped with the "a" designation for Tbird. I can still buy them from my supplier. There are limited AMD authorized motherboards for them, but I used an MSI board. Worked very well.;)
