Help: Setting up Wireless Net in house

Hi All,
I'm moving and need to figure out how I can blanket my new place with wireless coverage. I'll be setting up a wireless router upstairs with the cable modem however I am pretty positive this single station won't be able to cover the downstairs living area.

So my question is, can I set up a second access point somewhere downstairs within range of the upstairs station so that I can spread coverage area?

If that isn't too clear ... One Wireless router upstairs connected to the cable modem, a second Access Point to cover the downstairs living area (NOT connected to a wired network or cable modem). I want the AP to act as a relay station: Laptop(downstairs)->AP(downstairs)->Wireless Router(upstairs)->Cable Modem.

This can be done right?

Thanks in advance for the help.

You could have another AP hardwired in the basement, and set up the ssid the same, and you should be able to "walk" between them. If you can't hardwire one, You'd have to find two wireless AP's that can act as a bridge at the same time, or get 2 wireless ap's and 2 that can act as a bridge . Not sure if there are any I haven't been keeping up on the wireless scene much.

From what I understand, in order to bridge two wireless APs together, without hardwiring them via the LAN ports, requires support of something called "WDS", and each mfg apparently implements it slightly differently. I'm actually still trying to get two of my wireless routers (different models) to do that that myself, looking for the proper firmware updates for one of them before I embark on the experiment.
