Hey AnandTech users,

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with organizing my surround sound system so that i can have it be 5.1 when i play on my PS3.

I can post pics of my setup and what I've plugged where, but I'm just wondering if it's even possible...

here are the links to check the pics out:

Anyhow, thing is I've plugged my 5.1 into my DVD player and I'm wondering if there is a way to get that 5.1 setup onto my PS3 ... I've got HDMI cables and optical cables too , so if anything needs to be replaced or moved around or whatnot it should be a big problem, i just cant seem to be able to figure it out.

If you have any questions concerning how I've set things up right now, or need more info about the TV, surround sound, etc that I'm currently using, or if you'd need some specs, let me know

Thanks in advance for any/all the help you can give me!

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like you've got a combined DVD player/receiver? Are there any optical inputs on there that the PS3 can plug into?

Tell us what inputs you have on the receiver, and /or take a picture of the back of it.

ok so i'm back from work, here are the inputs on my receiver ( it's the samsung HT-TX52 ) it was a bundle with my 46" Samsung TV so yeah... anyways here's what's on the back of the receiver

5.1 Channel Speaker Output Connector
Video Output Connector
Component Video Output Connector
External Digital Optical Input Connector
FM 75O COAXIAL Jack
TX Card Connection
AUX IN 2 Connectors
HDMI Output Jack

If you need anything else please let me know, it's going to be rather hard to take a pic of it though

He said Optical.

Anyway OP, you need to connect your PS3 to this. After this you just have to go to audio settings and tell it to use the optical connection for audio and tell it its capable of Dolby digital 44.1, 48 and probably 96KHz audio. It may be compatible with DTS as well, you should see this marking on the front panel if it is.

After that you should have 5.1 audio.

Yikes, no HDMI in? Your next best option is optical in. Worst case would be stereo RCA in.

so i connect the PS3 to the receiver with an HDMI cable, tell it to take DTS ( it's supported cause it's on the front panel ) and then i set the receiver to digital in and my PS3 should be in surround sound ?

did I get all of this correctly ?

the PS3 has an HDMI and the receiver/dvd player combo has one too, so I just need an HDMI cable from PS3 -> Receiver to have surround technically... and another from the Cable Box to my TV to have HD Television... so where would the optical wire apply or be needed ?

PS3 HDMI to TV HDMI
PS3 Optical out to receiver Optical In (this assumes your receiver does not have an optical in)

Set the PS3 sound settings to Optical, choose the 5.1 sound checkboxe(s) and you should be good to go.

Now if you want to hook up the cable box optical, with only one input, you will need another piece of hardware Something like these

...but I'd use it as an excuse to buy a new receiver :)

If he does need a Toslink switch, there's no need to spend so much: http://www.monoprice.com/produ...=1&format=1#largeimage
