Hi guyz, I'm trying to set up a Q3 internet server to let people play. However, I'm not very experienced, and I've only previously setup LAN servers to play with my friends, and so I have a few questions...

1) Do I need to be a dedicated internet server in order for people to see my server on the internet?

2) Is there any way I could be in the game playing too?

3) Is there a list of console commands for servers? I went over to planetquake.com and their server help wasn't too comprehensive when it came to console commands, and most of the in-game console commands don't work on the server console...

Thanks!

Pardon me if I refer to you as a newbie, but...sounds like it :p. Yes, it does have to be "dedicated" internet to show up for people. There are countless server configuartion progies out there. Find one of those. Servarena works fine.

One way to play on your own server is to just double click quake3 again. When hosting internet games, make sure you allow the server some "hunkmegs". This allocate memory for it.

STick this in your Q3A command line:

C:\...\quake3.exe +hunkmegs_32

How much mem do you have? 32 for servers at least, and 16 for clients. The other way to play on your server is from another computer on a LAN or home network. Direct cable conection for all it matters. Have fun. If you have a slow computer or a bad internet connection (don't always count on cable or DSL to make good server) your server might suck. Good luck!

You can call me a server newbie, coz I am :)
I've played Quake3 ever since it came out, but never set up a server before...

So I can actually run Quake3 again on top of the server, cool, I didn't know that.

As for my system, I have 2 right now sharing a cable modem connection(Win98SE ICS). The host for ICS is a Celeron 533@600 with 256MB SDRAM, so memory's not a problem. My other networked computer(10Mbps network) is a P200MMX@225MHz with I believe at least 128MB EDO-DRAM. Is this enough to host a server? I'm probably not gonna be hosting for a lot of people, maybe a limit of 4 altogether(including myself). Its just that there is a SERIOUS lack of Q3 servers around my area, and I'm getting sick of playing with bots or in servers far away wher my ping sux.

Thanks!
