Help setting up my NAS server

I have three computers in close proximity that I want to hardwire together and have one as the NAS server.

The problem is, the router is in another room and I do not have access to it. So right now I connect using wifi to every compuer.

So the challenge is to get the three main computers hard wired so I can get ethernet speed while still being able to connect to my wireless internet router for wifi.

Make sense? Do you know how I would go about doing this?

To get them wired together, youd have to plug them into a switch/router, if your going to do that, you should just wire them to the current wifi router

No sense having wifi and wired connections, if your wired, the wifi is useless

Like I just said they cannot be wired to the wifi router! It not in an spot I can reach.

A solution here would be to use a wireless bridge to connect to the main router / Internet, and to wire all the local computers to that bridge or to a switch connected to that bridge.

You can "hack" a bridge using Windows Internet Connection Sharing on one computer, or forget about the bridge altogether and run a combination of wireless + wired everywhere if you already have wireless capability everywhere.

There are many off-the-shelf devices which do wireless bridging, but note that some of them require compatible support on both ends. Client mode bridges in contrast connect as a standard wireless client (thus don't put any special requirements on the main router) and share that connection with locally wired clients.

DD-WRT is the most complex and flexible way of setting up a DIY wireless bridge. Install it on a compatible router and set it up in "client bridge" mode.

The Netgear WGPS606 is an off-the-shelf client-mode bridge which is available cheaply these days in refurb sales / eBay. It supports up to WPA encryption.

The SMCWEB-N is a draft-n bridge.

Some "gaming adapters" are the same, but there you need to check if the implementation supports multiple devices via an add-on switch.

Thanks for your tips. I'll lay it all out tomorrow and see if you guys thing my configuration is going to work properly.

OK, would this work?

Linksys Wireless Access Point

and then connected to this switch: Netgear Switch

So I would plug the wireless access point into the switch and then run Ethernet cable from the switch to the four computers I want hard wired?

Also, would I be able to access the computers attached to the switch via Wifi as well if I wanted to access the computers from another room?

I was also goign to suggest a Bridge setup like Jack did up above. basically a wireless router you configure differently to act as a host for the wired devices. Some can do this and some can't.. Check out his link above for Bridging.

And I woudln't get two devices to do what you want, you can get a wireless router (not an AP) that can be a bridge by itself and woudl hat the normal 4 ports in it.

Pretty sure the WRT54G can do it.

Here ya go:

Make sure that the WAP564G version that you can get can work as client, and can provide good security.

Technically you are better off getting an WRT54G and Flash it with DD-WRT (as Kelemvor posted above).

Using a Flashed WRT54GL you do not need an additional switch and it can do client with WPA.
