So we just got satellite Internet at our house (we've been suffering on dial-up until this point, we live out in the boonies) and I've been trying to figure out the best way to set up our wireless and wired network to provide the best experience.
Here is the setup of everything so far. This is a farmhouse at about 1100 square feet on each floor. The main desktop in our house, as well as the modem for our internet are located on the ground floor at the far end of the house. Here I have a linksys e1200 router setup for now to allow basic wireless usage, this however does not cover the basement so well on the opposite end of the house. And to top it off on the end of the basement that is not covered well is my room, in which I have my server running Plex to stream movie to every other computer in the house (moving said server is not an option) That is currently connect to a separate linksys e1200 temporarily until I can get this all wrapped into one, with some speed improvements. Streaming movies over a 100mbps line doesn't always work so well.
So here is what I'm planning on going with:
This switch as the backbone so to speak so as to allow fast, wired data connection between the Plex server and everything else wired and wireless. There is the server, the desktop upstairs, three laptops, and three phones that use the WiFi on and off. The server and desktop use wired.
Here is a quick look at what the house looks like and locations. It's not to scale.
I'm just not sure how to bring this all together to work under one network. Any help would be appreciated!
