Help setting up home network with 3 PC's and 1 Server

Hello all, I'm probably making this entirely too complicated, but here are my computers:

Main - Vista Home Premium x64
Secondary/Crunching - Ubuntu
Media - Vista Basic x86
Server - Windows Server 2008

Here's where I am stuck: I want the server to function not only as a NAS and print server, but also as a complete backup solution.

Every computer needs to be connected to it, and I would like it to make complete image backups, and incremental backups to the individual folders. Is this possible?

Also, do I have this straight ? --> The Windows server box will have the entire drive shared (not with OS), while the PC's will just have the specific folders? I'm really confused on this, even though I know it should be simple.

One more thing, does anyone know how to operate the Windows Server machine headless?

Thanks, look forward to the replies.

You make Server 2008 by using the Remote Desktop Protocol service built into it. All of the your Windows OSes have RDP clients built in. You connect with the client software to remotely control the server. You'll have to enable Remote Access from the "System Properties" control panel of the server.

Do you have a disk imaging program in mind? Neither of your Windows Vista clients have backup imaging software built-in. You'd normally send your backups directly to a shared folder on the server. You'll have to choose some backup software for those OSes.

Sharing an entire drive in Server 2008 is not considered good practice. There's really no reason to share anything but folders.

Unless you are running a Windows Domain, I'd normally recommend Microsoft's Windows Home Server ($150) as the best operating system for your needs. It not only serves as a file/print/media server, but automatically performs and manages full image backups of Windows XP and Vista clients. Backups are done on an incremental basis and are very space-efficient. WHS provides fast restoration of PCs and files from a wide variety of past dates.
