HELP!!! Setting Up Cable For The First Time. DHCP Server Unavailable??

Hi, I just got Rogers@Home installed yesterday (I'm in Toronto, Canada) and I've been trying to configure it manually. I've been running into some difficulties in contacting the @Home server.

Background information:
P200MMX, SOHOware 10/100 NIC, LanCITY cable modem, Win98SE

The cable itself was installed by a Rogers technician; he simply brought the cable from outside through the wall and into my room. I installed the network card myself; it was detected by Windows and, after installing the driver, it is listed under Device Manager. The light at the back of the NIC is rapidly flashing green, as is to be expected. On the cable modem, the Power and Block Sync lights are solid green, and the Ethernet Traffic light is flashing green rapidly, but dimly. At the back of the cable modem, the light is green, signifying that is is receiving power. All the cables are snug and secure.

I've configured my Network settings according to this FAQ, which says that I should be able to connect to the Internet afterwards. Unfortunately, I get DNS errors whenever trying to connect to a website.

In addition, attempting to "renew" in WINIPCFG results in the following error message: DHCP Server Unavailable: Renewing Adapter "". No lights change when attempting to renew (i.e. the two lights remain solid and the Ethernet Traffic light continues to flash rapidly).

Rogers has no clue why this is happening or how to fix it. They told me to try again tonight and give them a call. They also said someone would look into the problem, and gave me a reference number.

I have a few questions:

1. Could this problem be due to a faulty cable modem? Some of my friends have told me that LanCITY modems are old and unreliable. This was the modem that Rogers gave me when I signed up as a new customer. I believe the NIC is alright, because the light is flashing at the back.

2. Could this problem be due to improper network settings in the Control Panel or improper Internet settings in Internet Explorer? (I don't believe the latter has anything to do with WINIPCFG though)

3. Could this problem be due to the fact that Rogers is switching from @Home to @Rogers? They're breaking away from Excite and thus the DHCP server may be down. When I called, though, they said the server was working properly, they could connect to my modem, and they weren't sure why I was receiving the errors. Also, one of my friends who lives five houses away from me has his Rogers@Home up and running. 🙁

4. Why does the error message include the words adapter ""? Does the "" signify something that is amiss?

Here are the things I've tried to do:

1. Played around with the network settings. Even changed my IP, DNS, Gateway, etc. to specific values instead of auto-detect or disabled, but this had no effect. I'm still receiving the errors.

2. Installed the "ipac_off.inf" file found on the Win98SE cd. Now, no autoconfiguration IP is given when I load WINIPCFG, but I still receive the same error when attempting to renew.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you all very much.

man look u havve to first find out that your tcp/ip is not currupt..

Try to ping localhost and if it does not go throu that means its messed up so then u have to reinstall the protocol.

Or the other thing that might be possible is that the isp's end is messed up.Why dont you call them up and they will prolly tell you if there is a problem in your area!

Thanks, skeletal. I'll try to ping localhost when I get home. Rogers says the service is up in my area and they're not sure why I can't connect to their server.

Someone at my school suggested I check a different cable to see if that would be the culprit. Or, I could take my comp to someone else is my neighbourhood and plug it in and see if it works. That would verify that my NIC is not at fault.

Any suggestions?

Pending the outcome of the localhost event 😉, turn all your TCP/IP stuff to auto. Auto DNS, gateway, IP, etc. Then turn off your computer and the cable modem for about 5 mins. Turn on the cable modem and wait for it to sync. Then turn on your computer. Once it's booted up, check WINIPCFG and see if you have an IP#. If you do, then try pinging 216.151.100.123 (that's AnandTech). If that works, then try pinging www.anandtech.com.

Update: Rogers said that the problem is at their end for sure. They're working right now to fix it. There's nothing more I can do.

Also, ping localhost worked, but I don't think that means anything.

It's working now. Rogers fixed the problem last night. Everything should be faster today after they finish setting up the server.

Thanks for everyone's input and assistance.
