Im trying to share a cable connection with a smc barricade router(the one found in the hot deals forums). My troubles lie in the router i think. I can ping the router from any computer connected so i know the prob is the connection between the router and the isp.
WHen i plug the modem into the router the green light keeps blining almost liek its trying to establish a connecttion but cant and keeps retrying. Anyone have any ideas of how i can get this thing to work? I tried manually setting the router to the isp assigned ip address. As well as a dynamic one.

I don't know this particular piece of hardware, but it sounds like your connection isn't established. There is a setting (or should be) for

show interface
eth0 x.x.x.x Mask 255.255.255.0
wan0 Physical Port: Trained
wan0-0 Dest IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Mask 255.255.255.255

wan0-0 settings are what you're looking for. (where x = the actual ip address)

Might try going to the command line and type "show running" -
and post the results :)

imhotepmp guessing you asked this in another forum or contacted your ISP and know the answer by now..

many cable providers are set up to recognize the MAC address of your NIC and will not assign an IP to any other MAC

that might be your problem, who is your ISP and what is the brand/model of your cable modem??

If your cable company uses a cable ID (@home does), you'll have to enter that into the router's "Name" or "host ID" section. (i.e. @home uses the C-123456-a type names...)

Also, some cable companies use the MAC address of your NIC to allow you to log in. You may need to set your routers MAC address (SMC has the ability, I think) to that of the NIC...?

Good Luck...:D
