Help Setting Up A NAN

A relative and I who lives relatively close want to set a Neighborhood Area Network with a wireless connection between us. He'll be the source of transmissions. I have tried connecting to his Linksys router but the signal is intermittent for a steady connection. To this point the signal only comes to a window of my home and then completely drops, up in the attic, and in the garage which is not attached to the house. So in order to amplify that signal and in turn capture it via the NIC on the laptop I got the Linksys Range Expander and able to get a good connection. Unfortunately, I cannot browse the internet. Connecting to the router directly is no problem but using the Range Expander somehow is not making things work. The problem is that I cannot get an IP address. I have tried using the automatic settings and static ones as well without success, in terms of the laptop acquiring an IP address. If anyone has a solution to this then I would appreciate a response or at least pointing me in the right direction. TIA.

What hardware is being used in this setup? Namely the router/wap model and the types of NICs being used (internal pci, external usb, laptop pcmcia, etc.)
