Hey all,

I just got home from my first semester of college & I'm dying from my slow internet access. :-( But, anyway, I brought home my computer from school, but right now it's not connected to the net. The machine I have at home that dials up to the Internet using a 56K modem is running NT 4.0. My machine from school is using 98 SE. Both machines have network cards in them with RJ-45 jacks. All I'm looking to be able to do is to network the two machines together so that both can have internet access (albeit, extremely slow internet access). I don't think I should need a hub for this as it's only two machines, but I'm not really sure. If someone could give me a few pointers on what type of cabling I would need for this job & what I might need to do to configure the two machine's network properties it would be greatly appreciated. Or if you could just point me to a useful resource on the web with the information I need, that would also be appreciated.

Thx,

DC

You will need a crossover cable for your two computers.
Go into network applet inside control panel, set both to same workgroup with unique names.
Add client for microsoft networks and file and printer sharing.
Then add the protocol you want for your network. Use netbuei for now.

Go here to learn about sharing out internet connection.

If you're only going to network 2 machines together, then you do *not* need a hub. You need a "cross over" RJ45 cable. I'm assuming you will go buy one rather than make it yourself.. so be VERY specific if you ask a sales person. Some friends have been pushed to buy patch cables by sales people that assured them they were the same thing.

1)If you're going to use the NT machine as teh actual dial-up machine, then go to Network properties, and go inside the TCP/IP properties. The last tab (i think) should say something about IP forwarding. turn that on.

2)Assign IPs to each of the network cards in both machines
ex: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2

3) In the Win98 machine, (assuming this one is 192.168.0.2 and NT is 192.168.0.1)
Go to the TCP/IP properties.

4)In the gateway tab add the IP of the NT machine 192.168.0.1

In the DNS Tab:
5) Enable DNS

6) Type 192.168.0.2 in the HOST text field

7) Add 192.168.0.1 to the DNS Search order list

8) run the cross over cable between the machines

9) reboot

no further setting changes should need to be made
