Hey guys.
As you've noticed, SETI@Home is in danger of closing due to a shortage of funding. The fact that it has come to the point of asking members for help is kinda sad - you'd think that a government could fund it ($3/4 million) considering the amout of work S@H is doing, without gaining anything in return.

Anyway, I was thinking yesterday: What if, for the time being anyway, whenever you sell something on EBay/AT, you donate 10% to S@H?! I mean, if you're low on cash, you're probably not going to be selling stuff anyway (since you generally sell old stuff to make room for the new). I dunno, I'm willing to do it. What do you guys think...

Nice idea, but my 20% already goes to another cause. :) This on top of the 40 to 50% that the government takes away from me as taxes.

Wow didn't realise they were in crisis! :Q :(

I got the email but hadn't gotten around to reading it until now.

I only sporadically sell stuff on ebay so Im just going to make a straight donation (not that I can afford much :p)

RoD , you have a quick mind and Good heart. And as Assim...I plan to make a donation, too.

But, My thought was....that if each one processing for SETI donates $1 (one) Dollar or equivalent....(that wouldn't hurt the pocketbook too much).............then the project would have at least 25% more than the finacial goal.

Thanks Soggysocks.

Unfortunately, the minimum donation is $10. Still, i guess that means you only need 10% of members to donate for the same results.

BtW: I'm getting a 7900GT int the next few days, and when I sell my 6600GT, I will give 10% (hell, maybe 20%) to S@H.

Good thing I found this thread. I almost thought the email was a scam. The html link kept trying to open gif files with a cid program.

I noticed that they had a big jump in donations this month. I assume that the email campaign started this month. I'll make a donation later in the day, after I get some sleep.

It is too bad that the minimum is $10, else I'm sure that more people would donate. The minimum is probably due to the common donation webform they are using through the school.

I think this should be stickied. It will be forgotten if it keeps sinking among other threads.

Yeah, a sticky would be nice, atleast until the S@H funding issue has been resolved.

Donations recieved this month to date: US$ 144373.54
That 20% of what Seti needs
(Only 0.73% of members have donated. Imagine if 10% donated!)

Why not a team donation, then you could donate as much or as little as you wanted and it would be pooled into 1 donation?

Great idea btw :p

Well, if there are ppl here who want to donate <$10, they could PM me, I'll send them my paypal details. Then I can do the team donation idea.

Nice of you to offer & no offense but I don't think most people will give money to someone they don't know ,or barely know.
A catch22 & I don't know how you can get around that?

Well I couldn't see any way around it either - atleat the offer is there. Anyway, if it's over $10 you can donate it yourself. This would only be for small donations.

It doesn't look like I'll be getting a 7900gt any time soon, so I wont be able to donate the money from selling my 6600GT.

So, I donated $25 yesterday. I'll still donate 10% from the 6600GT when i finally sell it.

Just won a small price in a lottery. All of it went to Seti@Home.
I'll do this now and then - let's see where that goes ...
