Hey there folks,

I recienty purchased a scsi setup and this was my first dip into the scsi world. I bought a Adaptec AAA-131U2 scsi Raid controller and two Seagate ST118202LC using this 80-68 pin adaptor. Here is the seagate website for my drives but it is fairly bland. Now I will explain exactly what the error is I am getting and what happens after than and what I have done to trouble shoot this.

Here are the errors I am getting. mide you I am at work and this is for my personal PC so I have written down all the errors in my effort to be exact as possible

When I boot my computer to does POST then goes to the SCSI bios screen. it says press (F6) for setup. Next it says 64M memory check is good then next it goes to detecting the drive. it says "Ch A, SCSI ID #1: Start Unit Request Failed". so I reboot an dthis time hit F6 to enter setup. there are two options, one is for settings and the other is what is in the scsi chain. so I select the latter and it cycles through the scsi ID numbers 0 - 15 and then displays a list of ID's and whats on each ID. I says on ID 1 my ST118202LC and I can select two options from there. 1 is to do a low level format and the other is to verify drive intregety or something to that effect. I click on the veruify option and I get this error.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

SCSI CDB Sent: 03 00 00 00 0E 00 07 00 01 00

Host Adaptor Ststus: 00h - No Adaptor Error

Target Status: 02h - Check Condition

Sense Key: 01h - Recovered Error

+Sense Code: 5Dh

+Sense Code Qualifier: 32h

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

so now I hit esc and then select the same option again and it asks if I would like to verify the drive and I click yes and it does it's thing and says it's fine. wtf?

ok so I do have two of these and it seems to only be one drive but sometimes it's there and something it's not. so I switched SCSI ID's and 80-68pin adaptors and some thing. NOW it's erroring everytime. solo

here is another catch, when I add two drives and the drive with the lower SCSI ID errors this time requardless of the drive I use but when I test them seperately I get the error on that one drive repeadately.

Now here is what agervates the mess out of me, I can install an OS on the errored drive and it works fine. I can also build an RAID 0 array with it and it works fine too. When I use the array config utility is shows no problem with that drive .

here is how I have my setup

___
[___]-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-|

toi the left is my HBA and then the 7 slot cable with my terminator at the end. notice how the two slots ad the end are very close? one is facing one way and one is facing the other. This seems to be where the cable was designed to host the Active Terminator and I place my two drives in the two slots closest to the terminator with scsi ID's 0 (being right next to the terminator) and 1 (being next in the string). From what I have read this is right and should be right.

here is my last option. I can buy a matching drive w/o the PCB to replace my errored drive and I can switch my PCB off thatr drive and use the new one. (does that make sense?) will that help or do you think my prob is somewhere else.

Thanks to all who read this and provide insight.

Mitch

EDIT 1: I just d/l Seagates SeaTool and I am going home for lunch now to try it. I will report my observations when I return.

EDIT 2: I finished the 100% short test and the Long test both with Good condition rating. it says there is nothing wrong with the drive. now i am confused? could be a bad cable? (it's brand new) or the card is going bad? I also moved the cards around and moved the scsi card to the top slot minus 1 for space between video and scsi then there is a space below the card then my nic and the Audigy.

here are the SeaTool results

here they are.

I am assuming this is the good drive with scsi ID 0

sh-2.05b# ./st -i /dev/sda
/dev/sda

I have an avtive terminator on the last connector. it's an LVD cable so I thought only 1 was needed. I am about to finish my entire post

do you have ANY other cards in ? try a different slot for the card. Adaptec (at least in the older models) wants IRQ10 (at least for my model), and if any other device is using that, the results become unpredictable and random. Try playing with the slot, and turning off devices in the bios, etc.. just to see what effect everything has. The other obvious thing to me also is that hard disks are supposed to be device 0, NOT 1 or above. Let me know what happens.

The HBA should get ID 7 in the chain since that has highest priority, every other SCSI ID is fair game for attached devices.

ok here is the scoop/. I have installed both drives and have ran seatool on both and they check out fine. I am really confused. I set the IRQ for the drive to 10 like you said and it still acts up. I am really stumped here folks..

ok here is my last reply for the night.

I used the seatool from seagate and did all the tests and they all came out fine. I also did an extended list of info about the drives

here they are.

lastly whats wierd to me is the date listed on the drives are different and the one with the older date works fine and the newer one fails. I also noticed the FIRMWARE numbers are different. Is there somewhere I can uodate the firmware?

Thanks!

Some of the older drives/raid controllers have a problem with SCA adaptors. You should ensure that you have them setup just right. Also I dont know what OS you plan to use but that controller doesnt even have Win2K official support, at least it didnt back when I had one, and I had to use WinNT drivers/software to even get it to work at all. Also that is one of the WORST performing raid controllers I ever owned. Couldnt get better performance than if I had no raid controller at all. Setup your SCA adaptors to only have the ID jumper, dont use any others. LVD terminator at the far end, drives anywhere in between. Low level format both drives with the controller.

Personally I would get an LSI based dual channel controller and put that old Adaptec back in the box and sell it off like all those before you. I dont know ANYONE who liked the 131/133 series raid cards. I have a few ATTO raid controllers and consider them amoung the best in a moderate price range.

I suggest going to www.2cpu.com and check out the guys over there who run all kinds of raid setups for good advise on a good SCSI raid setup.

I spent over 200.00 form my AAA-131U2 and wouldnt give 10 bucks for one now. IMHO Not trying to be rude or mean, thats just a terrible first experience. It leaves you to believe SCSI RAID is pure POO POO.
