Ok, I got something wierd happening here. I have an old-a$$ ISA Adaptec AHA-1540C SCSI host adapter hooked up to a Seagate 2G SCSI HD. They seem to work in XP, as the drivers are loaded and it automatically detected the seagate hard drive. So I can go into drive properties and get the size, serial, product number, etc by hitting autopopulate. But the problem is that it doesn't show up as a hard drive in windows explorer. Any gurus here know how do fix this?

Thanks

I know exactly what you are talking about..do this

GO to Administrative tools>computer management>storage>disk management>

THen click on the 2GB harddrive that will probably be graeyed out...right click on it...you should see at least one of these options

:import dynamic disk
:format disk
:import basic disk

if you have stuff on it you want to save, import it, if not format it...beware, if after you format(it will be a basic disk) you want to resize partitions etc, you will not be able to on a dynamic disk..it is designed for software RAID arrays, so to change it in any way, you have to delete the entire partition and its contents

Good Luck!

well, I went into the SCSI bios, and I'm doing a low-level format, see if that works....

It says "depending on the size of your disk, this could take from a couple minutes to a few hours"

Anyone have any idea how long a 2Gig drive will take to format?

well it should...hummm...

did you ever try the SCSI adapter's bios, and formating it? Also, this might sound stupid, but did you scroll down? it might just be at the bottom of the screen....what about enabling it in the device manager....I'm just trying to find out if I left any tips out...

go to seagate.com...maybe they have a prog or something that should help you out..otherwise, disk managemnt should detect it. i guess you could recheck your isa drivers, to make sure there aren't any irq conflicts or something...

did you also check the SCSI HD's jumpers...make sure it is NOT set to Device Id #7 for that is the SCSI adapter's Id on the channel(s)...

good luck..I'm going to be around to help if this doesn't work...

Not long..then again it is an ISA card

PCis are more efficeint, but regarding formatting, thatis just a guess.

on an adaptec 19160 Ultra160 adapter(mine) it doesn't take long for 18GB so it'll probably go quickly

Yo,

Yup, I did scroll down :p

Well, its been formatting for 20min now.....

The host adapter (according to the scsi bios) is set at 7 and the HD is set at id#0

I'm assuming that this all means my terminators are set right, otherwise I wouldn't be able to see what I see....

Gotta go to class now, I'll check back in an hour...

COOL!!! IT works now after the format. It took like 70 min to format, during which there was no progress indicator. But it works now. Kinda cool, an ISA SCSI adapter made in '93 is working in my WinXP box!!! It had the drivers for it!!!

Anyways, thanks for the help Goose....

np....you might want to upgrade that soon..as in whenever you run out of space. FOr you I recommend an IDE drive because SCSI is expenisve..better..but more expensive.

Even a modest IDe will out class the drive you are using now....still, if you want SCSI, you can consult me and I'll be glad to help you choose the best option

nah, my wife has a 1.2 gig POS IDE hd, and a guy at work had this 3'x3'x4' 486 server which he gave to me. I mean this thing was huge, and it contained an old ISA SCSI adapter w/ 2 2gig drives. I thought I'd spend the day to see if I could get them working in my wife's machine, just so she has some breathing room. So I wasn't looking to spend money, and performance is not the main thing here....

So yeah, thanks again for your time.
