Help scanning photographs

Sorry for a really ambiguous question - but I need help scanning photograph. I have an hp scanjet scanner and when I attempt to scan a regular photo it comes up pretty grainy. I tried increasing the resolution from 200 ppi to 1200ppi with no help. Any general suggestsions? Or any tutorial sites?

DPI won't help for viewing on screen past a certain point. 200dpi should be fine for viewing on the monitor. So keep between 200-300dpi to keep the file size on the sane side.
How big is the original photo? Is the image quality setting maxed? Is it downsizing?
