American horses are being killed so their meat can feed the palates of overseas diners in countries such as Italy, France, Belgium, and Japan. Show horses, racehorses, foals born as a ?byproduct? of the Premarin© industry (a female hormone replacement drug), wild horses, carriage horses, and family horses all fall prey to this detestable international industry. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of horses are stolen every year for the horsemeat trade.

------------
UPDATE
-------------

On September 20, the U.S. Senate approved amendments to the Agriculture Appropriations bill that signal the demise of horse slaughter for human consumption overseas, ... and would end the trafficking in stolen pets for research.

Victory for Horses
"The time to end this slaughter is now." Senator John Ensign (R-NV) spoke these definitive words on the floor of the U.S. Senate on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 20. He encouraged his colleagues to support his amendment to the Senate Agriculture Appropriations bill to prohibit the use of any federal taxpayer funds to slaughter horses for food exports. Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), the amendment's lead co-sponsor, echoed this call, and implored other senators to "end the slaughter of one of the most precious American symbols."

"Every year, more than 90,000 American horses?thoroughbreds, family ponies, and others?are slaughtered for human consumption abroad in countries such as France, Belgium, and Japan," said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). Fortunately for our wild horses, the Ensign-Byrd and Sweeney-Spratt-Rahall-Whitfield amendments will shut down all horse slaughter, thus returning a measure of protection to our remaining wild horse populations.

Why don't they just start breeding them for meat instead of stealing them? Ya know...like we do for cows.

What's wrong with that? They have four legs and are quite tasty when prepared properly. It's just another source of meat.

Currently, two foreign-owned slaughterhouses in the United States are killing horses for human consumption. They are Beltex Corporation in Ft. Worth, Texas and Dallas Crown in Kaufman, Texas. According to the US Department of Agriculture, 49,325 horses were slaughtered in 2003.

Why is eating cow, buffalo, etc ok and horse is not? I don't see any problem with any of the above.

I support People Eating Tasty Animals.

The only problem here is that the animals are being stolen. Other than that, I only care as much about horses being eaten as I care about cow being eaten. NOT MUCH AT ALL.

To be fair to the OP, I missed that part. However, I find it highly suspect (at least here in the US) and would like to see some verifiable links on that aspect

Judy Taylor of Kentucky sought help in caring for her two beloved Appaloosa horses, Poco and PJ, due to her own serious health problems. At the recommendation of a friend, she contacted Lisa and Jeff Burgess who agreed to provide that care, with the understanding that if they were unable to continue doing so, the horses were to be returned to Judy. Despite this agreement, within seven days of receiving the horses, the Burgesses sold them to a known ?killer buyer? for $1,000. (Killer buyers act as middlemen for the slaughterhouses, indiscriminately buying horses without concern for the horses? origin or condition.) Soon after Judy discovered what had happened, she frantically set off on a cross-country search for her fraudulently acquired horses.

Eventually she learned the horrifying truth ? her horses had been slaughtered for their meat at Beltex Corporation in Ft. Worth, Texas. Judy was successful in bringing charges against the Burgesses. The Kentucky Court of Appeals said "the Burgesses' conduct clearly rises to the level of being outrageous and intolerable in that it offends generally accepted standards of decency and morality, certainly a situation in which the recitation of the facts to an average member of the community would arouse his resentment against the actor, and lead him to exclaim, 'Outrageous!'" (click here for entire court opinion)

Theft and fraudulent acquisition aren?t the only illegal activities used to supply the market with horses for slaughter. Documents obtained from the Bureau of© Ginger Kathrens/Taurus Productions Land Management, the agency responsible for protecting America's wild horses, show that federally protected wild horses have been sent to slaughter for years despite a law against such abuse. In the early 1950's Velma Johnston, better known as ?Wild Horse Annie,? began a campaign to protect wild horses from slaughter because of the cruelty she witnessed first hand. Her work culminated in the passage of The Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act in 1971 that stated in part, "It is the policy of Congress that wild free-roaming horses and burros shall be protected from capture, branding, harassment, or death... "

Irresponsible owners seeking an easy and profitable means of getting rid of their animals provide the slaughter industry with additional horses. Still others are purchased at auction, where equines have been found for sale who are sick, sore, lame, disabled, blind, and pregnant. Many are accepted for sale without a "Coggins test," which screens for exposure to the deadly Equine Infectious Anemia, or a general health certificate. Killer buyers and slaughterhouse operators would like you to believe that all of the horses they slaughter are old and past recovery and have arrived there legally. In truth, many horses may be sick or injured because of neglect, but could recover with appropriate care and veterinary attention.

Would you eat dog meat? I think it's related to that sort of thinking. You get attached to a dog, your pet, and you don't want anything to happen to it. Lots of people have horses as pets and are VERY attached to them. Should we take all the stray dogs and kill them for meat as well?

People become attached to pigs, sheep, cows, etc. Its called eating the animals that are raised and/or caught specifically for consumption by humans. Obviously you won't eat the family pet.

I've had dog.... and lemme tell you something, it tastes just as good as the Chinese term for it implies.

My sister raised a grand champion lamb one year. She was quite attached to it, much like a kid would be to a puppy. It went to auction, someone had some tasty meat. She bought her first car with the money some 4 years later. Raising high quality livestock involves being friends with your animal right up until the point where you are ready to eat it.

We in Russia also eat your horses.

We also eat cows, but those our. I do not agree with the author of commentary about the cows and the pigs and the sheep. Pigs are very good in order to eat up in winter. This makes stomach complete and warm. Cows are good also. But sheep are best in order to make warm object of clothing during the cold winter and some people as contact with the sheep also. This is not tradition in the cities (I of Moscow, but living to Kiev, the Ukraine now), but in the country, men make to warm with winter with the rear passage of sheep. They indicate that this is very tasteful, but I think that this is abominable.

Relations to all.
