There are parts of Frisco that are"small town family life", but those are big bucks. Traffic sucks around here, I am not going to lie. Most likely she is going to have a hell of a commute. You may want to look for a house up in the north Bay. It is a bit more remote, but probably more affordable, plus it is less like the big city.
What is the name of the company she is going to work for?

wow....expect to pay a LOT for housing. Especially in San Francisco. The nice neighborhoods depend really on where your GF's job is located. How much is good $$? For a really nice nice house be prepared to pay $650k plus easily.

It's called born and raised here, plus my mother is a real estate agent. I might have over emphasized nice nice house. If you want a nice decent sized house. Anyhow it is all a matter of perspective, buddy.

sure... I believe you...that price might get you something nice alright...in the burbs like where I grew up..try the N.East bay for instance....30-40 mi. northeast... Pinole...Martinez...Benicia...there you might find something in that range...S.F proper WILL BE ALOT more....so just what does your "mom" say about that, sonnyboy???

Ha ha...if you live near a BART station, you should almost not bother with getting a car. The price for utilities seems to have leveled off...though you never know

Everything worthwhile is accessible through public transportation and if it's near a BART station, you could live almost anywhere in the greater SF and still be able to get to work in a reasonable amount of time.

As for the social life, it's exciting if you want it to be...peaceful if you want it to be...

LOL!, It's bad, real, real bad. Last friday I had to do some work in San Francisco (our office is in San Jose). I got done at 4:10pm, first I paid $25 to get my car out of the parking garage, the the real fun started when I attempted to drive home (Newark, CA east bay). It took me 50 minutes just to get to 101 from the building I was in at 111 Pine St. Then it was smooth sailing on 101 until I hit East Palo Alto. That was until I got off at Marsh road, and it took me another hour to go the 1.5 miles from 101 to the Dumbarton Bridge. Final travel time from San Francisco to Newark, a 34 mile drive? 2 hours and 45 minutes. Yea, you could say traffic is bad in the Bay Area. But, if you can use public transit all the time, you might be OK.

You sarcasm is definitely not apprecated as well as your condescending attitude. I don't know where you get your information but having been actively looking for housing in the bay area for a little while I stand by what I said earlier. I just did a search in a local real estate site and found plenty of 3-4 bedroom houses located all across San Francisco from Noe Valley to St. Francis woods. While they are not large in size compared to houses located in the areas that you mentioned but, for San Francisco they are very nice.

3 mill will get you into S.F. proper...although probably not as "large" as you might expect
@ 1.5 mill the burbs would probably suit you much better...however the commute is horrendous, unless of course you use mass transit

btw...i would consider 3,000 square feet with a garage to be adequate. if you see any good real estate web pages please send me a link or 2.
like this.
and i like this.
and this because of the square footage.
and this.

anybody have opinions? i have no clue what kinda neighborhoods these are in . or if there are advantages or disadvantages to these places. I will find out where she is going to work at tommorrow maybe and possibly post it. THANX A BUNCH GUYZ

I don't know the caliber/size of the housing your looking at, but I can assure you the housing of which I speak is on 3/4-1 acre w/3-4 bed/2 bath ranch style houses...nothing real fancy...price??600K and up, therefore S.F. area proper you could easily multiply by at least 2-3 depending on the different accoutrements that come w/ the real estate...so therefore "fancy" real estate would be "just" a little more... I stand by what I say as well..as for the "attitude" live w/ it or ignore it...either way,I couldn't really care less

Born and raised in SF. Driving? Don't think about it. Suck in your gut and take MUNI. Well at least to downtown. I live in Sunset and that's not too bad. Hasn't housing prices gone down lately because of the dotcom bubble bursting? But I do like the city, maybe it's because I was born there and "slightly" biased. Hehe...Niced size city, not too large, not too big. Has our own baseball and football teams. Mmm I miss SF, down here in San Luis Obispo for college.

Ok enough rambling.

Those houses you posted in the urls, you're NOT going to be able to find many (If Any) in SF proper. You can always commute tho. Check out South San Francisco and Daly City.

opinions??

the 1st link looked like a new build on a very small lot..Daly city commute sucks:disgust:
#2 looks like part of some kind of townhouse type of developement...wonder if it even has a back yard
the 3rd one must have been some kind of rental prop/apts...says "fixer upper" mmmmmmmmm.....
# 4 looks interesting depending on the area...looks like a nice modest house....nothing fancy but pleasing to the eye

he was never specific on how much money he wanted to spend so I didn't want to overwelm him by giving him the misconception that you had to be extremely rich to be able to afford decent housing in the bay area. A fancy house does not necessarily mean that it has to be large and expansive, again it is a matter of preference. I suggest we stop our bickering and help the fella out.

If you don't mind a long commute and value your house and neighborhood then I suggest finding a place in the peninsula. Look at the Belmont, Burlingame, San Mateo, Hillsborough area. The nieghborhoods are excellent as is the weather but it is at least a good hour communte into the city every day. You will definitely get more land for your money there also.

Live and work in SF. Fact of the matter is most of us that own property here for the last 15 years or more probably couldn't afford to start over here under present economic conditions. 2 bedroom single family stuco homes built over 60 years ago are going for 500k++ and aren't worh it. Their built one on top of the other and maintance is expensive and often because of their age. Traffic is bad and the population is around 800k in a city with infastructure designed for aprox.300k. Police, fire and emergency workers live outside of SF and have to commute here because they can't afford to live in the city they serve. San Francisco has become an economically gated community. There are numerous middle class jobs going unfilled here because people can't live on the wages. :disgust:

we hae a lot of $$ for 24 year olds....but i would prefer not to spend every dime i have on a house......

check this house out by using the virtual tour icon under the picture...the outside is ugly...but the inside is beautiful. what ya think?
you like the inside of this ugly house? i do!

777php....yer prices and advice are very helpful to me thanx!
and thanx to everyone else also.
about the fixer upper....what would 200k$ do to make it look better? i am sure it would do a lot...then maybe sell for profit later? or is value of homes gunna drop?

make sure you find out in what neighborhood this house is located in, it could be the nicest house in the entire area.

I suggest finding some houses that you are interesed in and take a visit to SF and actually go to these houses so you can see what type of area you will be living in. You can then come back here to ATOT and post the neighborhoods and I'm sure everyone will give you their personal opinion of it.

Montclair or Piedmont are excellent high class small neighborhood areas.
Definitely the small town feel and unbelievable views of SF if you get
the right house.

Don't live in San Francisco. I worked there for four years. It's a great place to
visit but...
