HELP! router won't take IP settings!

This is driving me crazy. i'm trying to assign a wan IP address on a cisco router and it won't take it.

172.29.110.52/255.255.255.252.

please help, I'm pulling my hair out here!!!!!!!!

Okay.. let me ask a few questions that an untrained idiot thinks should be known first.

What kind of router is it? What version IOS?

How are you connecting to router?

What kind of response are you getting when you try to set up the wan ip address?

Is it taking it like nothing is wrong but its not working? Or is it giving you an error?


I hope one day to be a trained idiot.

well, nobody bit on it so...

I sent some guys to do an install and provided them with IP addresses and whatnot - loopback, serials and LANs. One of the techs installing said "won't take the IP". Upon reading my e-maiil to him with the address I instantly went DOH!

just goes to show even an old guy can slip.

.52 isn't a valid host address with that subnet mask, since the host bits (only two with that mask) are both 0s.
.55 would also be invalid, since the host bits would both be 1s
Valid host addresses close to that would be .53 & .54 (among others).

P.S. Folks, if you're having difficulty "seeing" what's happening here, diagramming that last octet can help immensely.
