HELP Router and Switch HELP

Hello,

I'm trying to connect my dlink router to my dlink switch. When the connections are made the computers on the switch cannot access the router. This occurs with a static or dynamic ip address. The gateway is set to the routers ip address. What am i missing.

Mike

so you are going from a switch port on your router to a port on your switch? Do you have link lights? Is it a crossover cable? when set to dynamic IP's, do you get an address? Is your router your DHCP server?

Sounds to me like you are not getting a connection between the router and the switch. Put the cable linking them in an uplink port on the switch or use a crossover cable.

The link lights are on. The switch is auto sensing so the strait through cable i'm using is fine, i can connect to any port on the switch. I think the connection if fine. I cannont ping the router from any pc on the switch, pc's on the router work fine. My router is my DCHP server.

Mike

so you can get a DHCP address from the router (a pc in the switch) but you cannot ping it? Sounds like F/W. Can you ping/browse the web?

Not exactly,

I can get an IP from the router if the PC is hooked to the router. Hook through the switch i can't get an ip or ping the router.

If it helps the Router is a DLink DI 604 and the switch is a DLink DSS 5+.

I'm usually pretty good with this kinda thing but i'm stuck.

"The switch is auto sensing so the strait through cable i'm using is fine,"

Autosensing would indicate duplex and speed sensing. I think what your thinking is auto MDI/MDX, which would mean you can use a X-over or straight through. A link light would at least give the impression of connectivity. Have you tried another cable?

Also, if you give two machines static IP's on the same subnet that are plugged into your switch, can they ping each other. That would tell you if the switch is working but just not the uplink. I'd also try other ports for the uplink if your switch is indeed auto MDI/MDX

Yeah, the switch is auto mdi/mdx. I've tried the cable in all the ports. I'm convinced it's a problem with the uplink too and i guess i'll have to try another cable.

Thanks

Mike

Also narrow down where the problem is. Assign manually 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 with a mask of 255.255.255.0 to two machines and then ping from one to the other. If that works then the switch is ok. You say try another cable like it's a hard thing. That would be one of the first things to try.

Trying another cable is a hard thing since it runs through a wall! I know the switch and router both work. I think i'm gonna have to try a cross over cable.

Mike

It's not the cable. Intrestingly enough i can browse pcs on the router from a pc on the switch. So the cable is ok, it's somthing in the router config.

Mike

At this point I would Borrow, Get, Obtain, what ever, a second Switch and ?Try before I Further Cry?.😉

What do you mean by 'access' the router? those computers on the switch should be trying to access the internet through the router but not the router itself!? Please explain.

Is DHCP not working on the router? Have you tried with just one computer plugged into the switch.
