ok folks, posted the following under CPU/Processors & Overclocking part of forums, but no one there seems interested in helping me, 30+ views and not one comment, seeing as im going to be doing this to help increase my framerates in games i figure it can also fall under video section too, i know you guys here are always helpful so whatever input you got will be appreciated:

Ok, simple part, i have the specs listed below, in a Dell Dimension 8400 PCI-E based computer.

I am going to buy a 7800 graphics card soon, but thats gonna be a little restricted by my 3GHz P4.......

so i wanna know is it possible to take my 3Ghz chip out and whack in a higher rated chip (when buying this PC it was possible to buy it with all the way up to 3.6Ghz) without doing anything else? or do i need to do something with the bios for the motherboard etc?

I have changed most parts of a PC before btw except the CPU, PSU and Motherboard.

If it were me I would do this.

Pull the heatsink off the CPU then do a search on its markings to determine its overclocking ability.

Replace the motherboard and overclock the P4 3.0ghz.

The cost will be anywhere from 80-130.00 depending on which motherboard you settle on.

Which is much better than spending 300.00 for a cpu.

Im betting that your current cpu will easily overclock to 3.6ghz possibly higher.
