Help Requested: Moving from 470 to 840 EVO

I have a fair bit of technical knowledge but, compared to most of the active users on this forums, I'm definitely an SSD n00b.

Here's the story:
  • I installed a Samsung 470 four years ago as the boot drive
  • It's only 60 GB and it currently has 55 GB of stuff on it
  • I just purchased an 840 EVO (250 GB) to replace it
  • The new drive is still sealed in its box
  • I want to migrate everything to it

I've never migrated a drive before and the recent 840 fix has confused me further. If I understand things correctly, I should:

Download and install all of the relevant Samsung software (Magician, Migration Tool, and Performance Restoration), then physically connect the new drive, then update it with the PR fix, then migrate everything from the old drive to the new drive, then remove the old drive

If that's correct, is there anything else I need to know? I am somewhat confused about the drive names. When first I install the 840, I'm guessing it will become the I: drive, but then after the migration, I want it to be known as the C: drive (like the current 470), so will I need to manually change that or will the tool do it for me?

It is pretty easy, the Samsung Migration tool works well. You can always unplug your other two drives before cloning the C drive.
 
According to this page, the Performance Restoration tool will: "first update the firmware, then scan and calibrate all existing data on the drive."

So should I do the update before the migration process (clean drive) or afterwards (with my OS and programs on it)?

That's it. When you switch off and unplug the old drive and switch back on with the new drive only, Windows will automatically assign it the C drive letter. I have never used the Samsung migration software personally but you could always read the manual (link below) for fuller instructions.
