Help requested from WinME experts!!

Hey everyone!! My friend is having a problem with her new Compaq Presario 5012. It has an Accton 1207D in it and she has adelphia cable internet service. For some reason, we can't get it to release the IP address that keeps popping up (tried release and renew all under winipcfg) so it can't obtain a real ip address from Adelphia. It's coming up with a 169.x.x.x address when typically Adelphia's ip's are 24.x.x.x (at least mine is). Anyone have any clue what to do? Thanks!

Have you tried assigning the ip manually? Just be aware that @home ip's are not really static. Though it normally stays the same, your ip can be changed by them at any time and if you don't use your computer for an extended period of time, you may lose your number. If you have set it manually, you will have to change it.

Is the number that keeps popping up already set manually for some reason? Is there only one nic installed?

Make sure you NIC is set to get its IP address from DHCP. I think the button in ME says something like 'automatically get IP address'. Sounds like you have the address hardcoded.
